Amazing machine, especially at this price point by S. Johnston

Great Speakers but don't be fooled... by Robin Hood
I searched high and low for these speakers because of CNET and so many other reviews that spoke so highly of these little guys. I came across just one seller with these speakers seeing they were discontinued and before I knew it I had already ordered them and they were on their way. It wasn't, however, until a few days later that I got my tracking information and realized the weights were off. After contacting the seller I realized this was not 1 shipment but two. One was the subwoofer and the other the satellites and center speaker. These were a discontinued PACKAGE but NOT discontinued speakers sold seperately!!! I spent over $150 on speakers I could have bought seperately instead of together. It's no wonder how the seller is making his money. He's buying the speakers himself and selling them in a combo and pocketing the difference. Don't get fooled into this. Save your money and buy them yourself seperately and you'll be happier for it.

As far as the speakers sound quality goes, they sound terrific to me. I bought the Pioneer 1019 Receiver to go with it and a Panasonic Blu Ray and everything is great...just need that new TV now LOL. If you buys these you won't be disapointed, just don't get fooled into paying more money than you should like I did.

A great Home Theater system that will be hard to top at this price by C. Johnson
I purchased this HTIB system to replace my Sony STR-Se501 that I have had for over 10 years. That system has served me well, but recently the center speaker would occasionally cut out requiring me to tap on the top of the receiver to get the sound to come back. When working that system sounded pretty good, but I knew I had a problem when I played God of War 3 and I had a very hard time hearing the speech of some characters, even when my center speaker was working. I was all set to get the HT-S5200, but decided to hold off when I saw the HT-S5300 was coming out with better features. After getting the system setting up, I am glad I was patient.

The HT-S5300 is an excellent system for the price, even a much better deal when purchasing from online sites that give you a pretty hefty discount as opposed to the regular retail price. Everything comes packed neatly and securely in one large box and the basic instructions of hooking everything up is explained clearly on a full color poster which should have you up and running in no time. Even the speaker wires and inputs on the back of the receiver or color coded adding more the simplicity.

In addition to looking great with a black wood finish, the speakers are larger than I expected them to be; especially the front speakers and subwoofer, the fronts are so big in fact, instead of standing them up in a cubby hole of my entertainment center were I had my old speakers, I had to lay them down to get them to fit. I may look into getting some wall mounts for them, but my living room is an open area that isn't really set up for wall mounting. I have only hooked up speakers required for a 5.1 system because I really don't have the type of floor plan to accommodate the 2 extra included speakers without it looking tacky so I left the two extra speakers in their original packaging for future use. You may be wondering why I didn't op for the HT-S3300 instead of the 7.1 HT-S5300. The reason is that coming from an HTIB that has an active subwoofer (i.e. has its own power source, as opposed to a subwoofer that is powered by the receiver itself), I didn't want to "downgrade" to a passive sub. This is the main reason I opted for the HT-S5300 and had the HT-S3300 had an active sub as well, I more than likely would have gotten that instead.

After getting every thing setup, I admit I was unimpressed with the sound it put out. The bass from the massive subwoofer seemed weak and the other speakers did not seem to be as good as I expected, however after fiddling around with the sound settings I got them to sound excellent. The speakers required tweaking of their output level settings and I had to adjust the bass and treble settings to get the clear put powerful sound I was looking for. After getting my settings correct, I popped in God of War 3, and the sound is 100% better I can clearly hear characters speech and I now I want to play ALL my games again to hear them as they were supposed to sound. I have also tried my DVD's and my one Blu-Ray movie, The Dark Knight, and it sounds much better than my old receiver did. The subwoofer is quite powerful, and if you put your hand anywhere near the opening, you will feel strong puffs of air coming out. Sometimes the bass is a little overwhelming, but you can adjust the output on the back of it as well as through the receiver's menu.

An excellent feature is that you can adjust receiver settings directly on your TV screen without having to look at the small display on the receiver itself. This makes it easy to adjust settings from your couch using the remote using the well designed menu screen. Keep in mind this only works if you have HDMI on your TV, if you don't have HDMI, then unfortunately this feature won't work.

Speaking of HDMI, unlike many receivers in this price range, the HDMI carries both video and sound meaning no need for an optical or coaxial cable to get sound. This is another reason I waited to get a new receiver. The fact that this receiver carries both Video and sound also makes hooking up components much easier. I had been using a digital selector to get sound from my various devices, but after setting up my devices I discovered I didn't even need the selector anymore so it has been removed completely from my setup. My older components like my DVD and VCR/DVD Recorder don't have HDMI, but no worries; the receiver accommodates those devices as well using traditional connections. I applaud Onkyo tremendously for deciding to allow both audio and video over the HDMI connections on their newer receivers; it is a huge plus. Finally, the HDMI connections will support the new 1.4 versions, but works just fine with 1.3 cables as well. So don't think you have to get the new version of cables to get your stuff to work properly because you don't.

One small complaint I have is that sometimes the settings seem to not save or undo themselves and other times I cannot adjust the speaker level settings because they sometime get disabled for some reason. The full manual does not do a very good job in explaining why this happens, so that leaves me to trying different things to get it to work. But when I do get it working, I am very pleased with the sound. Also I ran into a situation last night in which I wasn't getting any sound from my PS3 to the receiver, but simply turning off the receiver and turning it back on resolved that hiccup.

One final thing I must mention is that this receiver is in the Harmony's database of devices so it works with my Harmony One really well. However keep in mind; instead of using "HT-S5300" as the model number you should use "TX-SR508". I believe that is the actual model number of the receiver (or very similar receiver) if you were to buy it separately. There is a model number on the receiver itself, but that model number listed is not in the database which I why I used "TX-SR508" instead. I haven't quite completed getting my button configurations done, but once I am finished, I suspect I won't need the included Onko remote anymore.

I debated for a while before deciding on this receiver and after getting the settings how I wanted, I could not be happier with my purchase. If I had some complaints then it has to do with the manual, even though its neatly laid out, it does not does a very good job in explaining why certain things happen (i.e. unable to configure various speaker settings at times), but the system itself is excellent for the price with good speakers and a powerful subwoofer that should satisfy most of us. You can always opt for better speakers, but for most, I suspect the included speakers would be enough for a while. If you are looking for a great Home Theater system that won't break the bank, you can't go wrong with the HT-S5300 which can function as 7.1 system and also a 5.1 system if you don't have the room setup for a 7.1 one. There are also option inputs for Front High speakers as well as a "Zone 2" setup that allows you to send sound to speakers in another room. If you don't really care about the active subwoofer, then take a look at the HT-S3300, a 5.1 system with much of the same features as this, but with one less HDMI port and a passive subwoofer and a little less power.

Cost and Performance truly can meet! by Darvell R. Harrison
I have been an audiophile for a long time have done tons of research and beel lurking on home theater forums for years and when the Onkyo 8 series was first released i was one of the first people in line for a pre-order... AND I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED!

This receiver is simply amazing, easy to set up and fully adjustable the onscreen menus make operation gand customizing your sound stage easy enough for the first timer yet gives enough options for the expert to have full control. The sound is amazing! i paired mine with the SKS-HT870 7.1 speaker system (also Onkyo) and i have been doing nothing bu marveling at the crispness and depth of sound that this receiver is capable of. I am looking at upgrading my speaker package over the next few years but i have ZERO complaints. I honestly cant see how anyone could have anything negative to say about this receiver... well other than they took so long to release it.

Perfect Sound for the bedroom by Kain
I recently upgraded the TV in my bedroom to a Samsung LN40C630 40-Inch 1080p 120 Hz LCD HDTV (Black) and it has a great picture but mediocre sound. This sound bar setup is perfect for the bedroom I set it up on the Walker Edison Regal 42-inch 4-in-1 TV Stand with Mount I also ordered from Amazon and it fits quite nicely - in fact with the black glass on the tv stand the speaker is almost invisible it blends in so well. The sound is perfect for a bedroom - not overly booming with bass although it will rock you if you crank it up. Sounds great and it has multiple inputs in the subwoofer to let you bypass needing a receiver! Sweet and Simple! Worth every penny.

Amazing device; this new generation Squeezebox has great sound too by A. Altman
This is an amazing product. It is my first Squeezebox product - really my first attempt at home to do computer based audio outside of just using iTunes and plugging my computer headphone jack into a stereo, which is great fun and sounds just OK - no where as much fun or as great sounding as the Touch.

I have been waiting for a product that I could use in my audiophile home stereo. Logitech SB Transporter seemed like a good bet but it was a bit expensive ($2000) and reviews described a quality of sound (lean, detailed) that is not my cup of tea. I'm a tube guy. Love LP's, love tube amps. Sweet lifelike sound.

If you are at all curious about computer based audio to feed your home stereo, you can stop reading here. Just buy this thing. It is amazing. It is not perfect. Some aspects of it are easier to configure than others. But for me, and I know for a lot of other people, it is a life changing experience as regards my use of music in my home.

I "rip" cds into iTunes using Apple lossless for computer playback and at a 256 bit rate for small capacity iPods. They both sound excellent when played by the Touch, either via analog out or via digital into a third party DAC.

This product is MOSTLY very easy to set up and use. It found my wifi network quickly, and it found the iTunes library on my Mac quickly. I am getting internet radio stations from all over the world. The sound from the analog outputs is now - with this new generation Squeezebox - EXTREMELY good. It has great tonality and is very lifelike. I'm comparing my superb Cary cd player (the 308T with tube output stage) to the the analog outs of the Touch and also to the digital out of the Touch into a Bryston BDA-1 DAC. The Bryston is winning awards, and it sounds incredible, (over $2k new, around $1400 used). I use the digital out of the Touch to feed the Bryston and it sounds fantastic. It is very close to my awesome Cary cd player ($2500 new plus upgraded tubes).

But the analog out of the Touch also sounds excellent. The Bryston and my Cary CD player both have a bit more detail and place the instruments and singers more distinctly in a sound-stage, and they have a little bit tighter bass, BUT BUT BUT the Touch analog output stage - for just $300 - has excellent tonality, excellent detail, deep and well controlled bass..... It is shockingly good. I may or may not get a 3rd party DAC for my home stereo (the Bryston is borrowed from a friend) but I don't feel that I NEED to.

I bought a second Touch to use in my bedroom stereo. I am keeping the first one in my main high end audio system. As I say, I may or may not end up adding a third party DAC in the latter system, not sure, but certainly not for the bedroom system.

Caution: I am having some trouble configuring some aspects of this device, such as controlling it from my computer. The basic functionality is working great. The Touch is taking music off the server on my Mac, no problem. And also I'm playing music off an SDHC card in the Touch (the first Squeezebox to offer this functionality, as I understand). Feeding the Touch directly with an external hard drive is working hit or miss. Trying to use the computer based "player" for the Touch is mostly miss.

The remote is great. When you start to use the remote the characters on the screen get bigger - it's perfect.

There is apparently a community of programmers that build third party apps for this thing. I've not yet begun to explore that. Some are free and some have nominal charge.

I am giving this 5 stars because it is a fantastic device; mostly easy to configure, sounds great, sounds even better when feeding an external DAC, and downright life-changing when it comes to home entertainment. I am tempted to deduct a star because of some aspects that appear buggy or hard to configure but I just can't do it.

The Touch ain't perfect, but it is fantastic.

timex sound machine by Carol S. Wallace
This is the second product purchased for my grandchildren - two of the same product for two different children. The item is played all night and every day during nap time. After three years the sound machine works perfectly.

Can't get any better than that.

An excellent buy for starting a 7.1 system by Michael C
I purchased this receiver a few days ago and waited until I ran it through as many set-ups and combinations as I could in order to be as thorough in my review as possible. The STR-DH810 has been able to easily handle everything I've thrown at it through every type of cable imaginable and has only had one flaw that I've noticed: upscaling a composite video signal to 1080p (from a Nintendo 64 in this instance) seems to come with some flicker to the upscaled image, but flicker was solved by changing the resolution to 480p or 1080i. My only fault with the input set-up in the back is that there are no audio inputs that correlate directly with the component video inputs, so when I want to hook up a Wii or Xbox with component cables I have to hook the audio cables up to different inputs. Therefore, I have to have the L/R audio cables plugged into the BD composite audio input and reprogram where the video signal comes from in order to have the video and audio programmed to the same input selection. Because of this I had to do some unconventional reassigning of inputs, but since each input can be named by the user it is simple enough to keep track of.

Programming the remote to work with all of my components was very simple. Everything is working smoothly together, especially by utilizing Bravia Sync with a PS3.

5.1 and 7.1 DTS-MA and Dolby TrueHD have been handled perfectly and the 7.1 set-up has given my living room a sound field that I wouldn't have believed. I prefer to calibrate my speakers by my own ear, but using the Auto Cal option to see how well it works was a very pleasant surprise, and trying to fool the mic by placing it in tough spots was harder to do than one would imagine. As long as the environment is quiet during the Auto Cal, then the calibration will do a fantastic job. I preferred to do a few tweaks of my own after the Auto Cal, but for the most part I felt that it was spot on.

This seems to be a fantastic starting receiver for the price, and the only reason I could see to upgrade to the STR-DH1010 would be for HDMI 1.4 support for 3D. If 3D isn't your concern then this receiver is the way to go.

PSW10 by D. Kay
I bought this sub to go with a pair of Monitor 40s, CS1 center, and Sony STR-DH710. It is an excellent addition. It is great for both music and home theater movies. If you care more about sound quality and looks than vibrating the neighbors house, this is the sub for you.

Good Quality by Matthew A. Garner
I purchased these speakers as part of my equipment for outdoor weddings for my DJ business. I have since taken them out to one such event, with more pending. I've also used them as part of the surround sound setup in my home theatre system.

As outdoor speakers, the sound quality is good, provided you send the majority of your volume out from your source, rather than the speakers themselves, as they tend to get a bit scratchy at the higher volumes. High wind will carry away the bulk of the sound, and RF signals from outside sources (like the boats docked not far from the wedding where I worked) will interrupt the signal.

Indoors, these puppies really shine. They give an excellent, warm, rich tone as supplemental surround-sound speakers, especially with jazz. Heavy bass does tend to distort the sound on these speakers, as they're not really built for excessive low-end performance, but overall, I can't complain.

wish there were better by E. Johnson
It seems that there are very few choices on the market lately, probably because most people who needed one already have it. I originally had a Magnavox. It was a loser from day one - cheezy setup and remote, poor reception, poor features. After a year it wouldnt stay on for more than a minute. The Zinwell is definitely a step up from the Magnavox, but I would have gladly payed more for two more steps up. A sturdier remote, a few more features, better reception. I couldnt find that alternative, so settled for the Zinwell. Overall, I'd rate it "acceptable".
